Burlap-Covered Demijohn

On our recent trip to Fairhope, AL, I discovered this wonderful burlap-covered demijohn as I walked into the beautiful shop, Aubergine.

I have never seen one of these before this trip. Of course, I have collected numerous demijohns, glass and wicker-covered, over the past 10-15 years, but this was the very first time I have spotted this type of covered vessel.

Though the owner was not in the shop, the lady manning the shop did tell us that these are very rare. She did not offer much else. I tried to do a little research on these, but I did not find much information. If you know anything about this type of vessel, please share with me and my readers.

I found a couple on etsy: click HERE and HERE.

I like the look of the vessel, so yes, it became mine. I added it to some of the other demijohns that are displayed under the stair parlor table. I can think of numerous places that this rare vessel can be displayed.

Of course, I'd like more (ain't that always the case???).

Burlap-covered demijohn, y'all!

  1. Hello Ron & Jeff;
    I have only seen Burlap covered Demijohn's such as this one in France.
    They were outrageously expensive, and would be rather hard to explain dragging back on a plane.
    (I have brought back some odd things in my travels....Don't Ask! :-)
    I do not recall seeing any of them in England, or Germany only France.
    I hope that this will be helpful to you.
