In the Courtyard {The Crane stands watch!}

I am not sure if you noticed these cranes in the gorgeous from yard of the home on Octavia Street.

To our delight, we found an exact crane while out shopping at American Aquatic Gardens.

We have had a small problem with herons who eat our goldfish in the courtyard pond. I even witnessed one devouring the innocent creature.

We were told by a worker at Aquatic Gardens that the crane model is useful to ward off other creatures. The bobbing action of the crane in the wind seems to detour other predators.

J & I are yet to add more goldfish to the pond as we are waiting for the water quality to improve. I just cleaned out the filter after a long winter’s absence.

I love the look of the crane. It bobs up and down in the breezes we have been experiencing.

By the way, the vedigris one in the background will be returned to the front garden’s sugar kettle.

Before you say that my brick needs a good power wash, I love the growth of algae on the brick. I know folks who pay for that look, and in New Orleans it all happens naturally.

Crane on Guard, y’all!

  1. Shame on those herons for eating those innocent goldfish. I hope the crane wards off those evil predators! I like the look of the algae on the bricks of the goldfish pond--gives it character. :) Have a great day! xoxo

  2. I hear you. We live near the river and the heron love our koi!!! We have to keep a net on until our maples leaf out. And we have rigged fishing line around the perimeter. We need a crane.

  3. I love the green look on stones too! I've scrubbed my cement pots with yogurt, then moss to get moss to grow on them and give them an "aged" look. Maybe I should write about that.
    (My mind wanders).

  8. Herons? Seriously?!?! I think I'm glad I never saw herons. The crows were bad enough.

  10. I would NEVER wash that brick... love it when algae and moss covers any type of stone! That area looks so pretty Ron. We added a waterfall to our pool deck last year and I added a crane to mine too.

  12. Thank you for not buying pink plastic flamingo-although I suppose they have their place, too.. lol I love the looks of algae and moss, too. That is a great looking piece-it really looks like a sculpture and how cool if it acts as a deterrent, too.

  13. Love your crane. We have the same problem here with herons and osprey. Some people put nets over their ponds but it doesn't look very nice. Hope your bobbing crane helps. I love the algae on your bricks. I love moss inbetween bricks!
