The Weekend that Was {March 22 & 23, 2014}

It was a great weekend. I have been fighting Springtime allergies, so all I wanted to do was to come home on Friday and veg.

J & I ordered from our favorite Mediterranean carry-out, Pyramid’s Cafe, stayed in, and shared parlor patter with a couple martinis.

On Saturday, I had an envie for crawfish, so J & I set out for the newly renovated Frankie & Johnny’s for the delicious treat. After fried bell pepper rings, I was entranced with eating the well-seasoned “mudbugs”. What an awesome treat!

For dinner on Saturday, J & I headed to the Quarter. We ordered a taxi through Taxi Magic at 5:15 PM for pick up at 6:00 PM. The taxi service never arrived. We called and received questionable customer service (an oxymoron these days). So at 6:30, we got in the car and drove to the Quarter. I don’t think J will ever use Taxi Magic again.

We dined at Sylvain, a popular restaurant on Chartres Street near Jackson Square.

It was was too dark in the main dining area to show you my food pics. The restaurant was way too loud for my taste. J’s fish special and my fried chicken were just okay. I was also not impressed with the lack of martini glasses for my Ketel One treat. J & I will not be hurrying back for dinner there anytime soon.

We came home after dinner due to the fact we were driving.

Yesterday, J & I took a long walk to Audubon Park. The Spring blooms along the way were magnificent.

After lunch, we shopped at our local Steinmart, and I did some necessary grading of school papers as 3rd quarter grades are due this week.

For supper, we ate healthy. J prepared seasoned boiled shrimp and an array of veggies- peppers, onions, mushrooms topped with crumbles of feta cheese.

All in all, it was a great weekend.

One more funny thing… I wished my godchild a happy birthday yesterday. Well, my sister called to say that my nephew’s birthday is March 25th (tomorrow). LOL! She said I do this every year. Ain’t it great to be early?

  2. Allergies didn't keep you in for very long, did they?

  3. The first guy blog I'm following! It's unheard of :) The only guy blog I know of so far. Spring has definitely sprung where you live, love the colors. Hubby and I are currently living in VA but will soon be moving to upper MI, sounds like we might experience two Springs this year, how fun will that be? Happy Spring!!

  5. What a lovely weekend, except for your allergies. Luckily, I don't have those issues. The flowers are gorgeous. Your night out sounds like fun....Love your dinner at home...looks so yummy.

  6. Parlor patter is always good for what ails you. Or Ales you! Great new look on the blog, Ron. It is very dapper! A spring stroll and shopping at Stein Mart is a nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Our Stein Mart closed several years ago and gosh, I miss it. My husband swears he is going to have a bumper sticker printed up for me declaring "I brake for Stein Mart." We may have to discuss it during a parlor patter session. Cheers!

  7. I have to say, the dinner J made looks divine and probably much better than many restaurants! :) How did he prepare the veggies? I'm sorry you have the allergy problem ~ I do too. I give myself shots 2x a week + meds. I just received notice that my allergy Dr has retired. Not good! I've seen him since the 80's.

The flowers are gorgeous! Can't wait to have some here. Oh, and the crawfish! To die for ~ love them and an icy cold beer which seems to be what you two enjoyed.

Sorry I haven't been around...so many issues last week. Not sure if you read about my "techie" problems or not. I love your blog design! Linda is the best. She did a few touch ups on mine and was extremely patient with me as I was about to pull my hair out with the cable/internet problems.

  8. Hi Ron, love your new design of Uptown Acorn. But, couldn't find the Comment section, hence this email. I thank you for the restaurant category since I plan on visiting New Orleans in October. Your Blog is not only an inspirational design site, but a wonderful travel guide to the shops and restaurants in your area. Are you also a floral designer? I know you are a teacher. Your Blog is one of the first ones I "hit" each morning. Kay (Philly)

  9. Sorry that your allergy's were bothering you, they can really make you sick. Your dinner at home looks so good. I really hate it when I am looking forward to a great dinner out and then isn't that good.
The flowers are stunning. I love Stein Mart too - get finds there.
    Have a great week.

  10. Just seeing this blog this morning. I'm glad to know that Sylvain was just okay because I have it on my Pinterest restaurant board. As you know, we had lunch at Tableau on Saturday. I enjoyed my petit filet, and Matthew's duck was outstanding. However, the wait staff appeared awkward and confused. Will not go there again--too many other restaurants to try. What a beautiful walk you and J had! Have a great day! xoxo

  11. Too bad about the taxi not showing and the okay dinner. Your flowers are beautiful. Here in MD everything is still dreary. We are even expecting snow today!!

So funny about your godson's birthday....early is better! I confuse my father's birthday of all people. I cannot get it right. His birthday is either the 23rd or 24th birthday so I call him on the 22nd and then again on his actual birthday. I am pretty sure it's the 24th...I think! I need help!!

  12. Too bad about the taxi snafu! With much of that, the service will not be in business very long!

Loving the pink flowers along your walk!

SteinMart! A favorite here, but I'll leave the grading of school papers up to you!:-) I've "been there, done that!":-)

Enjoy this Tuesday, the actual birthday of your godson!

  13. The last couple of days has been "raining" pollen. It's coated everything here! The azaleas in Audubon Park are beautiful! Mine are just now starting to bloom!
