We’re So Excited! We Just Can’t Hide It!

Who is by far the #1 Pointer Sister fan that I know? J, of course! I think it is amusing and quite cute that he has been a huge fan for over 20 years.

Get this! J & I are heading to Essence Festival tonight to see his favorite group of all time, The Pointer Sisters. Yes, I would say that he is “so excited; he just can’t hide it”.

J has been “in love” with the Sisters since their rise to fame in the 80’s.

With a string of hits like, “Jump”, “Slow Hand”, “He’s So Shy”. “Neutron Dance”, “Automatic”, and many more, the Pointer Sisters soulful, pop sounds still hold up today.

J & I have seen the Sisters at Chastain in Atlanta, at the Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre in Mableton, GA, recently at Columbia Theatre in Hammond, and tonight in the Superdome. I even saw the Pointer Sisters way back in I think 1985 in a rain soaked stadium when they came to Thibodaux, my hometown.

I have quite a “funny” Pointer Sisters story.

Picture this, it was 2001 (no we’re not in St. Olaf, it was Atlanta).

I taped the Oprah Winfrey Show every single day for years on a VHS tape (remember those) with my VCR which was set for 4:00 PM. Well? Unbeknownst to me, J. had picked up a package at the post office from ebay and came home for lunch to preview his ebay purchase, a grainy, poorly copied concert of the Pointer Sisters in Paris. He watched the tape for about 15 minutes, ate lunch, and hurried back to the office. In his rush to get back to work, he left his new tape in the VCR (Do you see where this is going?). Since the tape was homemade (it costs J a whole $9.95), you guessed it, 4:00 PM came around, Oprah taped, and his tape ruined. J did not realize the mix up until he sat down after dinner to finish viewing his favorite Sisters. OMG!!! It was one of the biggest arguments we ever got into. You would have thought that I killed someone. Thank goodness we were able to secure another grainy copy from ebay. You have to understand this is way before you tube which he now checks daily for videos of his fav Sisters. We got over the mishap, and we laugh about it often.

To prove that J is a huge Pointer Sister fan, I secretly pulled out his first briefcase from his days at Ford Motor Co. It is filled with all his Sisters memorabilia--- tickets, photographs, programs, fan club newsletters (Yes! he is still a member), a hankie,VHS tapes, and old records/cassettes. Take a look at his vast collection of Pointer Sister memorabilia:

I especially love the original 45 vinyl record of their hit, “Slow Hand”.

We are so excited to see the Pointer Sisters perform on the main stage tonight. Here is an excerpt from the Essence Music Festival Website:

“With a career that spans close to 40 years, these R&B superstars have received numerous awards, including a star on Hollywood Walk of Fame, performed with symphony orchestras from across the world and topped the charts in the R&B, pop and country categories with such hits as “Yes We Can, Can,” “Fairytale,” “How Long (Betcha Got a Chick on the Side),” “Fire,” “He’s So Shy,” “Automatic,” “Jump (For My Love),” and the classic “I’m So Excited,” which has played of 2.5 million times on radio to date.”

There is never a week that goes by that I do not sit and listen to at least one song by these ladies. J has to “twist my arm”.

Currently, the Pointer Sisters include Anita Pointer, Ruth Pointer, and Sadako Johnson, granddaughter of Ruth. They are occasionally joined by Issa Pointer, daughter of Ruth. June Pointer, an original member, died in 2006 at the age of 52.

  1. I was in the rain-soaked stadium in 1985, too! Great concert and so much fun--love them! "I'm So Excited" is my all-time favorite song of theirs, but I have to say that that I don't think there is one of their songs that I don't like. Have fun at the concert! :)

  8. Just a little anecdote, "The Pointer Brother" lived in my neighborhood for many years, so when there was a Pointer family event such as a high school graduation or wedding, we would see the Sisters' tour bus parked just down the street. I would have loved to go meet them, but I always respected their privacy and laid low.
